Football writer Charles Watts has revealed that Djed Spence will be on the Arsenal transfer ‘agenda’ this summer.

Going into this season, the Gunners signed a new right-back in Takehiro Tomiyasu. Since then, it’s safe to say the defender has impressed, with boss Mikel Arteta saying the Japan international has ‘got a presence’.

Despite this, it seems as though the north London outfit will soon be in the market once more looking for another option to play in the same position.

Indeed, while talking on his YouTube channel, Watts explained that the club have their eye on full-back Spence, on loan from Middlesbrough, after he impressed while playing against Arsenal earlier this season for Nottingham Forest.

He said: “They like Djed Spence, the Middlesbrough right-back. He’s on loan at Notts Forest.

“He played very well against them in the FA Cup. He’s a right-back who’s on their possible agenda when it comes to the summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Djed Spence and Arsenal…

Spence certainly caught the eye when Nottingham Forest beat Arsenal in the FA Cup this season. Former Gunner Kevin Campbell said ‘he was brilliant’ on the day and urged the club to make a move for the 21-year-old.

He also impressed later on in the same competition when he scored a goal in the 4-1 victory over Premier League opposition Leicester City.

With Tomiyasu looking strong, it might seem odd that Arsenal would go in for a new right-back. However, Cedric has only made three league starts this season, suggesting he isn’t seen as great competition for the role. Also, at 30 years of age, he is nine years Spence’s senior, so won’t be a prospect in the long term.

Taking all that into account, it would not be a surprise to see Arteta make a move for a full-back this summer.
