Joseph Masi has been speaking on the Baggies Broadcast podcast about how good Alex Mowatt can be for West Brom – but has highlighted a key concern surrounding the midfielder.

West Brom will have been hoping for a better season than the one they are currently experiencing, but they’ve got a fresh start under Steve Bruce, although old problems have not yet been removed as they’re yet to score in the two games under the new boss. Indeed, they have scored three goals in their last six league matches, although all of those strikes came in one game.

Will Bruce get West Brom promoted?

The Baggies has something of an overhaul last summer, with a new manager arriving as well as six new players. One of them was a former Championship captain in Alex Mowatt, but after a stunning start to the season which saw him net two goals and register one assist in his opening four league games, he’s struggled for consistency, which may be down to the club’s poor run of form and his own injury problems.

Masi believes that while Mowatt could be a top player, he’s not proving it at the moment.

He said: “I think Alex Mowatt has got the potential to be a real top Championship player and potentially a Premier League player, and he showed that early doors and he showed that last season at Barnsley.

“I don’t know what it is, he’s just out of form, isn’t he, and he’s been out of form for a long time. Molumby and Reach – I mean, the midfield three is just such a massive concern.”

TIF Thoughts on Alex Mowatt…

It could well be a case that Mowatt is suffering from some fatigue, as when he’s started for West Brom in the Championship, he’s never played under 75 minutes in a game, except for once earlier in the season when he was withdrawn through injury against Birmingham City.

At the minute with Mowatt, it may be unfair to judge him given that along with the rest of the current West Brom squad, he’s having to adjust to a completely new system and style of play with Bruce having the Baggies play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, whereas they had been used to a three-at-the-back system under Valerien Ismael, so this sort of form may continue for a bit longer.
