TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan thinks that Sunderland should look to appoint Neil Warnock as their next manager.

Sunderland are still on the lookout for a new man in the dugout following the dismissal of Lee Johnson a few weeks ago. There were reports that suggested former Black Cats boss Roy Keane was ‘closing in’ on a return to the club, however, it appears that won’t be the case as the 50-year-old and the club couldn’t agree terms over a deal.

The reports suggest that the club want someone in place by the time they play AFC Wimbledon this weekend, and Jordan thinks that the currently unemployed Warnock should be the man to do it.

Speaking on TalkSport, Jordan felt that Warnock’s personality and attitude when it came to dealing with members of the board made him the perfect man to take over at the club.

He said: “I think people like Neil Warnock are better suited for that job. Not just because I like Neil, but I know what he’s like to work with. He will put his arm around this Sunderland chairman and he will guide him in the right direction.

“Yeah, Neil’s a player, every chairman he’s ever worked for is the best chairman he’s ever had. He plays that game, but he also, I’m telling you, he’s a pleasure to work with because he makes it easy, he doesn’t make us and them.

“He includes people in the equation. He does his own thing and this guy needs a bit of help. This is a big football club he’s got there. It’s a big nut to crack.”

It is fair to say that Warnock can be a divisive figure in the world of football, but there is one thing that you cannot argue against, and that is his record when it comes to promotion, which as it so happens is the best in English football with eight to his name.

And that, perhaps more than his attitude and relationship that he might have with the Sunderland board, is the reason that they should look to appoint him, because he will give the Black Cats as good a chance as any to get out of the division that they have been stuck in for the past few years.

And even if it doesn’t happen this year, if he is given the summer transfer window as well in order to bring in the players he feels he needs to work with, then you would have to consider them the favourites to make the jump up to the Championship.
