Wolves reporter Liam Keen has been discussing a potential bid for Renato Sanches during the January transfer window.

Sanches is a player that Wolves have been after since the summer, and were reportedly quite far down the line when it came to making a deal happen, only for things to stall due to a knee injury.

Sanches has since gone on to play 20 times for Ligue 1 side Lille this season, scoring one goal and chipping in with three assists in the process.

Fitness issues plagued Silvio's career, but where did Wolves sign him from?

There were some reports that emerged suggesting Bruno Lage’s men could reignite their interest in the 24-year-old midfielder during the January transfer window, and with Adama Traore reportedly on his way out of the club to Barcelona, it could well be a case of one in, one out between the two players.

However, speaking on the latest edition of the E&S Wolves podcast following pleas from listeners for updates, Keen seemed to suggest there was little chance that the club would be making a move for the Portuguese midfielder before the window closes on Monday.

He said: “At the moment, no. From what I can hear, there’s nothing there.”

It might not be the smartest plan from Wolves to decide against an attempt to bring Sanches in this window.

Central midfield is an area where Wolves are incredibly thin right now, with just two senior options available to them in the form of Joao Moutinho and Bruno Jordao – although with Jordao still recovering from injury, that just leaves the rather inexperienced Luke Cundle as backup.

Given how close they were to signing Sanches in the summer, it’s clear that Wolves think that he can make a difference to the team, and considering their limited options – which could become even more limited in the summer when Moutinho’s contract runs out – it might be wise for them to invest in that position both for this season as well as the future.

Of course, there’s still some time for them to change their mind on the stance that Keen has hinted at, and it will be interesting to see if they do change their mind before the window shuts.
