ExWHUemployee has claimed that West Ham United goalkeeper Darren Randolph was set to leave the club this January before his move fell through.

With the winter transfer market open, Aston Villa had reportedly made an enquiry about the Hammers shot-stopper, with a view of bringing him in for the remainder of the season.

It now looks as though that deal was in fact very close to happening but only fell through at the last minute as the Villans could not loan out one of their other goalkeepers.

While discussing the situation on The West Ham Way podcast, Ex explained what he knew, saying: “Randolph was meant to be joining Aston Villa, and then that changed last-minute. Mainly, I think, because they couldn’t get their ‘keeper out on loan.

“And also because the ‘keeper situation with us in the summer – it’s a bit unclear. But it’s mainly because Aston Villa couldn’t get the deal over the line [at] their end. But we would move Randolph on a loan deal, certainly, if the offer came up.”

TIF Thoughts on Darren Randolph and West Ham United…

Lukasz Fabianski is very much the West Ham No 1 at the moment, while Alphonse Areola seems to be his trusted deputy.

On the other hand, up to this point in the season, Randolph is yet to play a single minute across all competitions for the Hammers. Taking that into account, it’s easy to understand why Ex suggests the club would be happy to let the Republic of Ireland international leave this winter.

It looks as though he would have played backup to Emiliano Martinez at Villa had the deal come good. But unfortunately, the move fell through.

Even so, Randolph may yet get himself to a different club in the near future. Although, with Areola’s loan spell set to finish at the end of the season and Fabianski’s contract also running out at the same time, perhaps the 34-year-old will stick around a little longer yet.
