Reporter Kaveh Solhekol has been speaking on Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show about a significant development in Newcastle United’s pursuit of Diego Carlos.

Newcastle are clearly in need of at least one new centre-back, with the Magpies having shipped the second-most goals in the Premier League this season, and Sevilla defender Carlos appears to be their current number-one target.

Will Newcastle sign Diego Carlos?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

While Carlos is currently playing for a Sevilla side in the Europa League and fighting Real Madrid for the La Liga title, Solhekol has reported that the defender has informed Sevilla he wants to leave, while also submitting a transfer request as he attempts to force through a move to Tyneside.

Solhekol has reported that Carlos is doing what he can to make this transfer to Newcastle a possibility.

“Newcastle want to sign him, I think the issue is negotiating a fee with Sevilla. I think Newcastle think he’s probably worth about £30 million, Sevilla think he’s worth closer to about €50 million, which is about £45 million.

“The really significant development this evening [Tuesday] was that we’ve been reporting that the player himself wants to move to Newcastle.

“But this evening, we told you that the player had today, this evening, told Sevilla that he wants to leave, he wants to move to Newcastle. And not just that: we also reported that he was working on writing a transfer request that he was going to send into the Sevilla president and the Sevilla manager.”

TIF Thoughts on Carlos wanting Newcastle move…

Eddie Howe has claimed that he wishes to bring entertaining football back to Newcastle United and this will also bring about a more possession-based style of play and a willingness to play out from the back, so signing Carlos seems a smart move given his pass completion stands at 89.2%, while the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Fabian Schar do not come anywhere near that level (FBRef).

Given Newcastle have had over two weeks to get this deal or any other centre-back signing completed, it should come as no surprise that their slow pursuit of Carlos has seen another unnamed Premier League club reportedly launch a bid for the Brazilian defender, thus handing the Magpies some stiff competition in their attempts to sign the defender.
