TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has been discussing Jesse Lingard and a potential move to Newcastle United on Deadline Day.

The 29-year-old England international has been a prominent name being linked with a move to St. James’ Park in recent months, with a report from Eurosport back in November suggesting that Newcastle were interested in signing Lingard during the January transfer window.

His future at Old Trafford has been uncertain for some time given his lack of playing time, while Newcastle were set to face stiff competition for his services, with West Ham United – a team with whom he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season – as well as clubs from abroad, showing an interest.

Deadline Day has approached, and so far, the move has yet to be completed, but speaking on TalkSport, Crook claimed that the discussion surrounding Lingard was still ongoing, and that if they could get the deal done, he felt it would give Eddie Howe’s men a huge boost in their attempts to stay in the division.

He said: “I’ve said all the way along that I never saw Jesse Lingard’s loan move to Newcastle as completely off the table. And I think that is still the case, I think negotiations are ongoing. I think that’d be an excellent signing for Newcastle if they can get that one over the line between now and 11 o’clock [on Monday].

“We saw the short-term impact he had at West Ham – if he does the same at Newcastle, they’ll probably stay up.”

Will Jesse Lingard end up at Newcastle eventually?

Crook is right when it comes to the type of impact that Lingard can have as his form at the London Stadium demonstrated, and given how close Newcastle are to safety, if he can have half the impact that he did at West Ham, he’ll give them a decent chance of staying in the league.

You just have to hope that they haven’t left things too late, because with just a few hours to go until the window will slam shut, it is certainly a race against time for them to get the deal done.

It just makes you think that they probably should have left themselves a little bit more time before making this strong a push to complete it.
