Everton journalist Greg O’Keeffe has expressed his concerns over the possible appointment of Vítor Pereira as manager.

Following the departure of Rafael Benitez a few weeks ago, the process of appointing a new permanent manager has already begun, with reports suggesting that names such as Pereira as well as former Premier League icons Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are being mentioned as possible contenders, with caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson also throwing his hat into the ring.

Pereira is certainly one of the more experienced names being mentioned, as he has developed quite the CV over the years – though it’s that long list that has given O’Keeffe some cause for concern.

Which manager used to play for Everton's academy?

Speaking on the latest edition of the All Together Now podcast, he explained how his track record when it comes to bouncing around clubs doesn’t give off the best look for a club that are looking for stability after years of chopping and changing managers.

O’Keeffe said: “Let’s just go off his track record. Why would a club that craves stability be giving him the time of day to come in as the permanent manager? What suggests amongst that, that he’s going to be the candidate to have a 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 years at Goodison and build stability? Because my head’s spinning here just looking at that track record. I’m thinking, what are they even thinking of?”

Stability certainly hasn’t been something that associated with Everton in recent years, with even goalkeeper Jordan Pickford coming out in 2018 when Marco Silva was in charge and stating: “You want stability throughout the club, don’t you? That’s what you want as a player.”

And when it comes to Pereira, even though he has had success in his career, O’Keeffe is right to have some concerns that he might not be at the club for the long run based on how often he has changed clubs as a manager.

So the question now becomes whether the Everton board see him as a potential long-term manager or someone who will just stabilise the club – and whether or not that will dictate how they deal with him in the coming days.
