TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has provided some details on Aston Villa and a possible move for Lucas Digne in the January transfer window.

Digne’s future at his current club is currently unclear following a recent bust-up with manager Rafael Benitez, with plenty of teams in the Premier League reportedly showing an interest in signing him in the January transfer window – including Steven Gerrard’s Villa.

According to Crook, Aston Villa are well in the mix for the defender, who is valued at £27m on Transfermarkt.

Speaking on TalkSport, Crook claimed Steven Gerrard’s men are set to throw their hat into the ring, and hinted that their recent acquisition of Philippe Coutinho might well give them an edge when it comes to landing the Frenchman:

Scott Hogan scored how many times in his poor stint at Villa?

“They want a left-back as well. And I’m told they’re one of a growing number of clubs tracking Everton’s Lucas Digne, who we seem to have spoken about every day this week.

“At the moment, his preference appears to be London, but just maybe, the arrival of a stellar name like Coutinho might convince Lucas Digne that maybe Aston Villa is an attractive proposition.”

Will Aston Villa spend big in January?

Left-back is certainly an area that Aston Villa need to add an extra body in, with Matt Targett taking most of the load at the position this season, it would provide a little bit more competition without having to rely on the veteran Ashley Young as their go-to backup option.

It will allow both players to remain fresh for the rest of the season, because with their recent games against Burnley and Leeds United being called off because of health issues, along with the potential of a cup run, then they might need them when fixtures start to pile up later on in the season.

It might be difficult for them with the likes of Chelsea & West Ham United able to offer European football, and Newcastle United having plenty of money to throw his way.

But as Crook hints at, the introduction of a name like Coutinho and his prestige and winning mentality might just be enough to convince Digne that Villa are a club on the way up, so it should be an interesting one to keep an eye on to see if they can take him away from under the noses of the other competitors.
