Wolves journalist Joe Edwards has given his thoughts on Francisco Trincao following his performance in Wolves’ recent game in the Premier League.

Bruno Lage’s men were able to pick up three points on the south coast against Brighton thanks to a goal from Romain Saiss in first-half stoppage time, a result that takes them up to 8th in the league table, but it wasn’t the best of nights from the Portuguese forward.

He completed 77% of his passes (below the team average of 78%), and whilst he did put himself about in other areas – completing two dribbles, winning two aerial duels and one tackle – in front of goal, he could only get away one shot in total (as per WhoScored).

And speaking on the Express and Star YouTube channel after the game, Edwards felt that he might need to try and change his game in order to find the back of the net, which would hopefully bring a confidence boost to the 21-year-old.

He said: “Trincao, I mean, he can’t buy a goal. For me, he was a bit off it tonight, I think he’s a player that needs a goal, needs a confidence boost. The things he’s trying aren’t really coming off.”

TIF Thoughts on Joe Edwards’ comments about Francisco Trincao at Wolves…

Have you been impressed with Trincao so far this season?

Whilst Edwards is right that Trincao might need to change a few things about his game in order to get more goals, the same could be said about the entire Wolves side. Lage’s men have only managed to score 13 goals so far this season, with only bottom club Norwich City having a worse record.

And whilst that has been propped up by the league’s fourth-best defence with only 14 goals conceded, it’s not sustainable for Wolves to have to keep relying on their defence to bail them out if they are to make a success of this campaign.

Wolves currently rank 18th in the league when it comes to shots taken with 174, so it’s hard to expect forwards like Trincao to be amongst the goals when the system doesn’t really allow for as many chances as the other sides in the division. So perhaps it’s up to the team and the system to be better before all the blame for Trincao’s poor form is put at his feet.
