Duncan Castles has been speaking on The Transfer Window podcast about how some people are pushing Anthony Martial towards a move to Newcastle United.

It has been well-documented that Newcastle will be looking to spend some money in the January transfer window and the Daily Mail has reported that Kieran Trippier is ready to quit Atletico Madrid and join the Magpies’ survival mission.

Signing someone with both Premier League and Champions League experience would be a serious message of intent, and that’s what they could do by signing Martial alongside Trippier, as the Frenchman’s agent has claimed that the attacker will be looking to leave Manchester United – while the Magpies have seen themselves named as a possible destination by the Daily Mirror.

Castles has claimed that some people think Newcastle could well be a likely move for Martial, who is valued at £31.5 million (as per Transfermarkt).

“I can tell you that there are certain people who have looked at the Newcastle United situation, and looked at Newcastle United’s need for experienced Premier League players and need for an additional goalscorer up front.

“[They] had suggested that Martial could be a good signing for them, because of his situation at United, because they have the financial wherewithal to pay his wages if necessary.

“We’re looking at it from the perspective of, is he persuadable? Can we offer him the best option for the rest of the season? Can we give him that platform to score goals again in the Premier League and get himself back in the French national team?”

TIF Thoughts on Martial potentially joining Newcastle…

Martial has not featured frequently this season and not once under new manager Ralf Rangnick, but to take a huge drop into a relegation battle would potentially be detrimental for the Frenchman’s career, as if he was unable to help keep them in the Premier League, that could damage his reputation in the top flight.

If the Magpies could strike up a deal, even just on loan, it could potentially be the difference between them staying up or not, as Martial is a proven goalscorer in the top flight, it would help ease the burden that is currently on Callum Wilson to score goals – and if it all went well, he could potentially earn himself a bumper contract and be the club’s marquee signing over the summer.
