Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has been speaking on his latest YouTube video to discuss the future of Cristian Romero in north London.

Spurs acquired the Argentine centre-back during the summer from Serie A side Atalanta, however, the deal for the 23-year-old is an initial loan with the option to buy.

Gold has now revealed a permanent deal for the defender is expected by all parties to go ahead, with the deal closer to an obligation to buy rather than an option.

Romero is currently out of action for the Lilywhites after a tricky start to his Spurs career, which has been hindered by multiple injuries and the quarantine debacle over the international break back in September.

Technically, there is just a matter of months remaining on the 23-year-old’s deal with Spurs, but discussing the matter, Gold had the following to say on the player’s future:

“I think Cristian Romero is going to be absolutely class. I think he was starting to show that. That deal, although it’s technically termed as an option to buy, it’s as close to an obligation as you can get without calling it an obligation.

“That’s what I’ve been told, and the contract has already been agreed, which is why it was made very clear that it was a big long-term deal, even though we then found out it was a loan. Because I think it’s kind of essentially all been agreed with the player.”

TIF Thoughts on Romero’s future…

We think this should come as welcome news for the Spurs fans, as we feel despite his multiple issues keeping him out of the side, we feel Romero has been a positive addition.

Having been awarded the Serie A Defender of the Year award for last season, there should be optimism around what Romero could bring to this Spurs side, who have been relatively strong at the back this season on the whole.

The arrival of Antonio Conte seems to have boosted the Spurs defence in the Premier League, with just one goal conceded in the Italian’s four league games in charge (via Transfermarkt).

Given Romero’s credentials – playing a big role in the success of Atalanta and Argentina – we think the centre-back could become the focal point of the Spurs defence under Conte.
