Newcastle United recently appointed Nick Hammond as a transfer consultant on a short-term basis after failing to appoint a Director of Football to date. Paul Merson isn’t impressed with the appointment.

Talking on Gillette Soccer Saturday, the former Arsenal man claimed the move didn’t make sense, and it was stupidity at the highest level.

His scathing attack continued, with him claiming Amanda Staveley and co don’t know what they are doing at the club.

Will Newcastle be relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The Chronicle on Twitter shared the comments with fans, leaving them outraged at what the pundit had to say.

How the Newcastle fans reacted to Paul Merson’s claim

“Had an agenda against us for a long time.” @minty_9

“Why did Paul Merson lose his voice when Mike Ashley was stripping @nufc like a madman, now NUFC is being rebuilt, he suddenly found his voice.” @jidecole20

“He’s hated us ever since the ‘bigger than Villa’ argument when he got pelters. I never pay attention to anything he says, ever.” @Paddyc1471

“Anybody actually value his opinion though?” @Michael56948053

“Let’s be honest, who actually listens to him?? He’s the only one left from the originals?? WHY?? Even Jeff Stelling is leaving.” @MickCarr23

“But if PIF had bought his beloved Arsenal he’d be lauding it #nufc.” @DavePunton

In Merson’s defence, it does seem a bit chaotic at St James’ Park. They came in and didn’t sack Steve Bruce straight away but didn’t give him time either, it seemed like they panicked with no plan.

Newcastle PL appearances quiz! This man is the all-time top Premier League appearance maker for Newcastle, but how many did he make?

After taking over the Tyneside club at the start of October, they have been hunting for a Director of Football, with no appointment made, or appearing to be imminent. That’s likely the reason for Hammond’s arrival, again, conveying poor planning from the new owners, so maybe Merson does have a point?

That’s not to say the new owners aren’t a huge positive for the club, because they are. Newcastle can now compete financially and start to rebuild on the pitch.
