Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on his latest episode of the Here We Go podcast to discuss Newcastle United’s January interest in Jesse Lingard.

The relegation-battling Toon will enter a first transfer window under their new ownership next month as they aim to add to their squad and keep their Premier League status.

Would you like to see Lingard sign in January?

Yes

No

No

One player Romano believes the Toon are showing interest in is Manchester United’s Lingard, with the 29-year-old evidently not in the plans of the Red Devils, having played just 87 league minutes this season.

However, it is also reported West Ham United are showing interest in bringing him back to the London Stadium in January after he decided to remain at Old Trafford over the summer following his loan spell.

Discussing the future of the midfielder and where Newcastle lie as potential suitors for the £19.8m-rated ace, Romano had the following to say:

“Lingard – Newcastle want him, so Newcastle are seriously interested in Lingard, but it’s not agreed yet. It’s still at [the] early stages. And let’s see what happens with this contract, because he’s out of contract in 2022 with Manchester United.”

TIF Thoughts on Lingard to NUFC…

Clearly, the midfielder does not have a spot in the plans at Old Trafford and it is likely the form shown during his loan spell at the Hammers in the second half of last season is the reason the Magpies feel he would be a worthwhile addition to their side.

The Toon only have 17 goals in their 16 league games this season, while only three of their midfielders aside from Allan Saint-Maximin have been able to get their name on the scoresheet this season.

During Lingard’s spell with the Hammers, the midfielder was able to score nine times in 16 league appearances, and if he could replicate that form on Tyneside, it could potentially put them in good stead to avoid the drop.

However, we think they should spend cautiously, as Joe Willock was unable to carry his sensational loan form into this season, when the Toon coughed up £25m to sign him from Arsenal over the summer.
