Football pundit and former Premier League defender Rio Ferdinand has praised Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy after he scored over the weekend.

During the Foxes’ last Premier League game, the English striker scored two goals in the first half, helping his side claim a 4-2 win over opponents Watford.

The efforts mean Vardy now has nine league goals for the season and only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has scored more than him (11) after the opening 12 games of the campaign.

While discussing the player on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE, the retired centre-back dished out the praise for the 34-year-old, comparing him with Arsenal legend Ian Wright as he closed in on his record as a goalscorer in his 30s.

He said: “Vardy – he gets goals, man. I mean, his story is phenomenal, I think he’s got 93 Premier League goals now since turning 30 years old. I think that’s the joint-most with Ian Wright.

“He’s a joke, mate. Seriously, bad player. Great attitude, obviously.”

TIF Thoughts on Jamie Vardy and Leicester…

It’s certainly fair of Ferdinand to refer to Vardy as a player with a ‘phenomenal’ story. As he says, the Englishman does now have 93 goals since turning 30.

According to TalkSport Arsenal man Wright scored his last effort since turning 30 at the age of 35 years and five months. At 34 and 10 months, the Foxes forward potentially has plenty of time to further improve his record.

For now, though, he’ll likely be focusing on helping his team edge further up the league table. Thanks to his strikes at the weekend against the Hornets, Leicester now sit in 10th place on 18 points.

A trip to the south coast is up next, where Vardy and co will take on Southampton as the busy festive period begins.
