The Sun’s Tom Barclay believes that Crystal Palace’s plan was always to give Tyrick Mitchell the chance to really establish himself at left-back.

The 22-year-old featured in four games in the Premier League for the Eagles in the 2019/2020 campaign, before making 20 appearances last season and this season becoming a first-team regular and making the left-back spot his own.

Barclay says that the plan of the club was always to allow Mitchell the opportunity to establish himself, telling This is Futbol: “I think the plan was always to give Mitchell the chance to really establish himself at left-back and he’d shown lots of promise in his performances when he’d been given a chance last season which sort of rotated I guess with Van Aanholt.”

After Roy Hodgson retired at the end of last season, Crystal Palace appointed Patrick Vieira as their new manager, with the former Nice boss signing a deal for the next three seasons at Selhurst Park.

Earlier in the season Vieira spoke about Mitchell and his development, telling reporters (via Football.London): “We knew how good he was, and we knew about his potential and we didn’t want to sign someone to block his progress. At this level, he needs to play every week and he is doing it well.”

Vieira got to work on making additions of his own during the summer window, with the club making seven new signings as, Odsonne Edouard, Michael Olise, Jacob Montes, Marc Guehi, Joachim Anderson, Conor Gallagher and Will Hughes all arrived at the club.
