Journalist Charlie Eccleshare has been speaking on the latest episode of The View From The Lane podcast to discuss all things Tottenham Hotspur related.

Spurs progressed to the final eight of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night with an away win at Turf Moor against Burnley, however, one player which did not travel with the squad was Harry Winks.

Does Winks need to leave in January?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The 25-year-old midfielder was also omitted from the Premier League matchday squad for the Lilywhites’ narrow defeat against their London rivals West Ham United on the weekend.

Winks did, however, feature in their Europa Conference League defeat against Vitesse and he spoke honestly after the game about how he has fallen from England call ups to the Spurs ‘B team’.

Speculation has surrounded the midfielder’s future for the best part of the year with links earlier in the year regarding a potential La Liga switch and then over the summer reports of interest from Aston Villa and Everton surfaced.

Speaking about the future of the Hemel Hempstead-born midfielder at Spurs and his comments following their latest European defeat, Eccleshare had the following to say.

(24:00) “But after the Vitesse game, he spoke to us that were out there. And it was really quite moving. I mean, he just looked so upset as he tried to pick apart where it’s all gone wrong, really.

“And on that point of, are you going to move in January? Of course, he didn’t say, yeah, I’m up for a move. But it was pretty clear to him that he is someone who looks like he needs a change.”

TIF Thoughts on Winks’ future…

Winks has had a really difficult start to the 2021/22 campaign with just 60 minutes of action in the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo (via Transfermarkt).

This comes on the back of the Englishman seeing his Premier League game time from the 2019/20 season (31 appearances) halved in the 2020/21 campaign (15 appearances) under Jose Mourinho.

With the midfielder’s downfall of game time with the north Londoners in mind, we think Winks has to view January as an opportunity to leave in search of more consistent football.
