Journalist Dean Jones thinks that Newcastle United could make a move for Alfredo Morelos.

Now that the club’s takeover has been completed, the club can start looking towards who they might be looking to buy in January as they look to get out of the relegation zone. And with a reported £190m to spend, they certainly aren’t going to be spoilt for choice.

Speaking on the latest edition of Touchline Talk, Jones listed a number of players that they could potentially go after during the upcoming January transfer window, before hinting that the Rangers man is someone that they could be taking a serious look at:

“I think that the type of players that they’re going to have to sign – because, like you say, they’re going to be asked to pay a premium now -they have to look at fringe players and players that are just looking for an opportunity.

“I’ve heard Alfredo Morelos of Rangers as well as somebody that’s on their radar. These kinds of players are the ones that you’ll probably see as more likely candidates to come in in January than [Erling] Haaland and [Kylian] Mbappe. That’s not happening in January.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments about Alfredo Morelos and Newcastle United…

Whilst the centre-forward position is certainly somewhere they are reasonably stocked in with Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Dwight Gayle, given Joelinton’s poor form in front of goal and Gayle’s injury history, they could always do with an extra body there.

Where do you think Newcastle United will finish this season?

However, whilst Morelos certainly knows where the goal is, with 99 goals in 196 games for Rangers, he also comes with baggage in the form of his disciplinary record, and it just doesn’t seem to be worth the risk for Newcastle to be taking.

If this had been under the previous regime and they were somewhat desperate to find someone, then it might be worth them considering. But now with their riches, they should be able to aim a little bit higher when it comes to targets, which should rule the Colombian out of contention.
