Former Premier League player Dean Windass doesn’t think that Steven Gerrard will want to take the Newcastle job immediately, believing that he will want to finish the project at Rangers.

Newcastle were taken over by a Saudi-Arabian led consortium in a deal worth £300m, which is led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) with PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media also part of the investment group also [Sky Sports].

Gerrard has been one of the names linked with the Newcastle job since the takeover, with the Telegraph reporting on the Rangers boss’ refusal to rule himself out of potentially replacing Steve Bruce in the St James’ Park dugout when quizzed on Friday.

Gerrard led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade last season and Windass believes that himself and Gary McAllister will want to finish the project at Ibrox.

“There was a little bit of rumour about Newcastle wasn’t there but I’m not sure about that and I don’t know what Steven’s plans are. I don’t know if he’d want to take the Newcastle job but I’m sure that him and Gary McAllister will want to finish this project this season, win the league this year and then see what happens,” Windass told This is Futbol.

Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has heaped praise on Gerrard following the speculation. As per football365, he said: “That’s part and parcel of being a high-profile manager. A high-profile manager that’s done pretty well here. Winning the league last season was decent.”
