Burnley defender James Tarkowski would be a great first signing for Newcastle United, says former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Newcastle look set to splash the cash following their takeover and Tarkowski appears to be one player they could move for.

According to The Telegraph, the 28-year-old is expected to be one of the new regime’s first signings, while Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard is another name thought to be on their list.

If they can get him out of Burnley, Palmer believes Tarkowski would be a great addition to this Newcastle squad.

“I think a lot of clubs have looked at him,” the ex-Leeds United and Southampton star said in an interview with TIF. “I think he’s a very, very good centre-half. I think Burnley have stuck their marker down and they’re saying he’s not available for less than 50 million.

“I make them right when you look at other players that are going nowadays. If you’re saying Harry Maguire’s 90 million, then I’m sure he’s worth 45, 50 million of anybody’s money. The boy [Ben] White went from Brighton to Arsenal for 50 million, so I make Burnley right on that. Yeah, he’d be a great first signing for them.”

Last year, when West Ham were interested in bringing Tarkowski to the London Stadium, Burnley did ask for £50m for the English defender.

It will now be interesting to see what kind of money they demand, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
