Southampton are not scoring enough goals, says former Saints midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl recently made it clear that, in his own words, Southampton would not start “parking the bus” to start picking up wins when talking about his playing style with reporters.

The south coast club are still without a win in the Premier League this season, losing 3-1 last time out against Chelsea, prompting the discussion about the team’s approach to games.

However, Palmer believes going forward is a bigger concern for his old side right now. The ex-Southampton player exclusively told TIF:

“It’s a fine line, isn’t it? If you look at them this season, they’ve conceded 10 goals. Well, Spurs and West Ham have conceded 10 goals and they’re eighth and ninth respectively in the Premier League. I think the problem with Southampton is that they’re not scoring enough goals.

“The fact is they’ve only scored five goals. So more to the point of, you know, shipping goals, I think the problem that they’ve got is they need somebody in there who’s going to score goals for them.”

Under Hasenhuttl, Southampton have been leaky. Last term, they had the second worst defensive record in the Premier League (via WhoScored). This campaign, however, they are indeed having problems at the other end of the pitch, ranking near the bottom of the league for goals scored.

Striking that balance is perhaps something the former RB Leipzig manager worked on during the international break with the players he had available.
