Former professional footballer David Norris isn’t surprised that Steven Gerrard has been linked with Newcastle United.

Following the departure of Steve Bruce, Graeme Jones was placed in temporary charge, telling Sky Sports that he will take the team for both the Crystal Palace and Chelsea games.

There has been much speculation linking different names with the St James’ Park hot seat and one of them is current Rangers manager Steven Gerrard. The Times linked Gerrard to the job alongside Roberto Martinez and former Arsenal manager Unai Emery earlier this month and Norris isn’t surprised to see Gerrard’s name come up.

“For anyone looking for an up-and-coming manager and they’ve got the money and ambition, I’m not surprised to hear that he’s been linked with Newcastle,” Norris told TIF.

The Liverpool legend led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade last season and stopped Celtic winning ten in a row by doing so. The Gers accumulated 102 points from their 38 matches, going the whole campaign unbeaten as they won 32 matches and drew just six.

Gerrard’s assistant Gary McAllister heaped praise on the Rangers manager, saying (via football365): “The thing is, since we have been here there has been speculation and links to several clubs.

“That’s part and parcel of being a high-profile manager. A high-profile manager that’s done pretty well here. Winning the league last season was decent.”

Overall, Gerrard has won 122 out of 189 matches as Rangers boss, equating to a 65% win rate.
