Noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has been speaking about the future of Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

Despite his young age of just 21, Foden has already managed to establish himself as one of the most important players in the Manchester City side under Pep Guardiola, chipping in as many as 33 goals and 24 assists in his 131 appearances for the club.

And even though his current deal wasn’t set to expire until the summer of 2024, reports in recent days seemed to suggest that a new deal was getting close to being completed.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that a deal appears to be done at the Etihad and that Foden will be sticking around until the summer of 2027:

“The agreement has been reached and completed between Phil Foden, his new agency and the Manchester City board over a new contract until June 2027. He signed a new deal with Manchester City only two years ago, but it’s really impressive what Foden did with Man City and with the English national team, he’s been always great showing his skills, showing his potential.

“And so this is why Manchester City, months ago – as I revealed on my podcast Here We Go about Phil Foden – opened talks with Manchester City over a new deal, now everything is set to be signed and completed. There is a verbal agreement between Foden and Man City.

“As I said, it will be a six-year deal, so everything is completed between the two parties. Now it’s time to sign, to prepare the paperwork, but Foden will stay at Man City.”

Will Foden go on to be the Man City captain in seasons to come?

No

This certainly should be seen as great news for Manchester City and their fans, because a signing like this really does cement his place in the City side for years to come, where he could go on to be an even more integral part of the side.

With Kevin De Bruyne at the age of 30, his productivity isn’t going to be around for much longer, but given Foden’s creative ability, as demonstrated both by his assists as well as his passing ability – he regularly completes more than 85% of his passes (via WhoScored) – he is someone that Manchester City can build a team around for the next decade.

So to be able to move from one player to another (whether it be under Guardiola or someone else) to act as the main man in the side is a line of succession that Manchester City should be applauded for.
