Supporting Arsenal would influence Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins if the north London club made a bid for him, says former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Watkins grew up supporting Arsenal, something he confirmed last season after scoring two goals in an impressive 3-0 win against Mikel Arteta’s side.

The 25-year-old has since been linked with a move to the Emirates, with The Sun claiming that the Gunners are interested in signing him as they look to shake up their options up front.

Palmer does not think Watkins being a fan of Arsenal can be underestimated should an offer come in, though he believes the striker is content at Villa and cannot see the Midlands club being prepared to sell.

“If it’s your boyhood club that you support, obviously that would influence you,” the ex-Leeds United and Southampton player said to TIF. “But he’s only just gone to Aston Villa and he’s doing well there.

“Aston Villa are not in a position where they need to sell, a wealthy owner – one I can’t see happening.”

As well as Watkins, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also said to be on Arsenal’s shortlist as they prepare for life without Alexandre Lacazette, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.
