Midlands journalist Luke Hatfield insists that West Bromwich Albion winger Grady Diangana needs to be playing as a left winger at the Hawthorns.

The former West Ham United star has operated primarily as a right winger throughout the start of the season.

Diangana can also play as an attacking midfielder but Hatfield believes that his best position is on the left flank.

Of course, he is adapting to life under a new manager following the appointment of Valerien Ismael, but he does not seem to be thriving in his current role.

In total, Diangana has scored nine goals and registered seven assists in 60 games, with Saturday’s draw at Preston his eighth Championship outing this season without a goal or assist.

And Hatfield believes that the 29-year-old could enjoy a new lease of life if he is given the chance to operate primarily as a left winger.

He said: “The interesting thing with Diangana is, we’re not seeing him playing in his best position which is on the left flank and I think Albion need to try to somehow get him into that position. I know Karlan Grant is also naturally playing off the left but Diangana looks a completely different player from that side of the pitch.

“Playing him on the right side has maybe not got the best out of him. He had a tough season last season in the Premier League, started well but I think the style of play under Sam Allardyce didn’t suit him.

“He’s adapting to a new manager in Valerian Ismael, I think he needs more opportunities to be given the ball and be given a little bit more free reign, I think that’s when you’ll see the best of Grady Diangana.”

Diangana has been with the Baggies since 2020 and is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt.
