Liverpool writer James Pearce has provided an update on the potential sale of one of the club’s unwanted defenders.

Due to the many injuries Liverpool’s key defensive options suffered last season, Nat Phillips found himself at the heart of the club’s defence on more occasions than most probably would have expected.

However, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both edging back to full fitness in time for the new league campaign, it looks as though Phillips may not be required at the club this season.

Though, with ‘no suitable bids on the table’, Pearce claims Liverpool have a decision to make.

Discussing the matter on The Red Sea Podcast, Pearce outlined the defender’s current situation, saying: “Nat Phillips is another one who was left out of the squad last night.

“Been lots of clubs registering interest in him, but as things stand, as we talk now, there’s no suitable bids on the table.

“And again, what do Liverpool do? Do they lessen their demands and take a smaller fee, or do they sit tight and wait to the very end of the window?”

TIF Thoughts on Nat Phillips and Liverpool…

Liverpool have already shown a willingness to offload some of the defensive options they required last season, failing to take up the option to make Ozan Kabak’s loan move from Schalke a permanent deal.

Newcastle are reported to be the latest club interested in acquiring the 24-year-old’s services, though the Magpies may not have the biggest budget remaining, having just splashed around £20m on Joe Willock.

With less than a month remaining in the transfer market, the future of Phillips may not be decided right up until the last moment, though clubs may act soon if they want to have him available for the first few Premier League games of the season.
