Steve Howey believes Arsenal have got the better end of the deal after Joe Willock sealed his permanent switch to Newcastle United last week.

Willock has moved to St James’ Park in a £20million deal after Magpies boss Steve Bruce made the midfielder his top summer target.

The switch comes after Willock scored eight goals in 14 appearances during a loan spell with Newcastle last season.

During his temporary stint on Tyneside, Willock became the first player since Alan Shearer to find the back of the net in seven consecutive Premier League outings.

Willock missed Newcastle’s opening fixture of the season – a 4-2 defeat to West Ham United – as his transfer was completed too late.

However, a move looked unlikely last month when Arsenal chief Mikel Arteta insisted Willock remained part of his plans.

While former Magpies defender Howey is pleased to have seen Willock return to Newcastle on a permanent basis, he believes Arsenal have got a good price for a 21-year-old who only made 78 appearances for the Gunners.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

He exclusively told TIF: “I think Arsenal have got a good deal. Yes, he is a prospect but he wasn’t featuring in Arsenal’s team.

“To get £20million for someone who didn’t really get in their team, I think Arsenal have done well. It’s good business.”
