Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield wouldn’t be surprised if Aston Villa didn’t sign a midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window.

Villa had been linked with Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse before he signed his new five-year contract, with Sky Sports reporting that the Saints turned down a £25m bid for him earlier on in the window.

There were also reports linking Villa with a move for Todd Cantwell at Norwich, but the Athletic’s Michael Bailey has claimed that Villa will not be coming for Cantwell during this window.

Dean Smith has been active in the window this summer, making six signings so far, with Caleb Chukwuemeka joining Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia, Ashley Young, Axel Tuanzebe and Danny Ings at Villa Park this week.

But while Villa have been active in the market, it wouldn’t shock Luke Hatfield if the club didn’t sign a midfielder this summer.

Hatfield told This is Futbol: “There haven’t been any solid reports with them being keen on many midfielders other than James Ward-Prowse really.

“It wouldn’t shock me if they went through the summer and didn’t sign one, it would be a little bit frustrating for fans but in the same respect if a deal pops up and one that they feel that they need to pull the trigger on then it could happen.”
