Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Tyrone Mings is probably going to become Aston Villa captain for this upcoming season.

Since joining Aston Villa from Bournemouth back in 2019, Mings has gone from strength to strength in the Villa defence and become a regular starter, having played 91 games for the club.

Mings played in all but two of Aston Villa’s Premier League matches last season, scoring two and setting up two more. After a brilliant season at centre-half for Villa, Mings was called into Gareth Southgate’s England Euro 2020 squad, where he played 90 minutes in the Three Lions first two matches and then came on as a substitute against Czech Republic, with the team not conceding a goal in all of his appearances.

After putting in some brilliant performances, Hatfield believes that Mings could in line to become the new Villa captain, telling This is Futbol: “Villa is very much a settled back five, if you include the goalkeeper Martinez.

“He is going to start in goal week-in, week-out, Matty Cash on the right, Matty Targett on the left and then you’ve got Tyrone Mings who’s probably going to be Villa’s captain this season just judging by the fact Grealish has gone, he’s probably the man in line to take over that role.”

Dean Smith has looked to strengthen his Villa squad overall this summer, with five players joining the club and adding some healthy competition amongst the Villa ranks.
