Aston Villa correspondent Gregg Evans has outlined the club’s current stance regarding a potential new midfield signing.

Following the loss of Jack Grealish, Villa had already acquired the services of Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey to name a few, though a solid central midfield addition has deserted them thus far.

It has been reported that the Villans were after James Ward-Prowse, but now don’t seem likely to pull off that deal as the Englishman has signed a new contract at Southampton.

However, while speaking on the 1874 podcast, Evans stated that this failed pursuit doesn’t necessarily spell an end to Dean Smith’s hunt for a new midfield man.

Evans claimed that people connected at the club are still naming potential targets. He said: “They certainly are considering options [in midfield] because there are lots of people connected to the football club who I’ve spoken to, who’ve suggested a couple of targets, a couple of players that could potentially come off.

“But there’s just a lot of variables, they need to move players on to get that done.”

TIF Thoughts on Aston Villa’s midfield…

The public attempts to sign Ward-Prowse certainly signified Villa’s transfer market ambitions this summer, while the club also lodged a number of bids for Arsenal midfield talent Emile Smith Rowe.

With both these attempts falling short, the club don’t have much time left in the transfer market if they are to bring in any new options.

One new name to pop up recently as an option is Juventus’ Weston McKennie. Having moved to Turin from Schalke last year – in a loan deal which turned permanent this summer for about £16m – the United States international may now leave the Italian giants after just one season (as per Birmingham Live).

If this deal was to happen, it could all but spell an end for Conor Hourihane, who was already expected to leave this summer.
