Watford journalist Adam Leventhal has been sharing some details concerning Andre Gray’s current situation at the club and a potential move away from Vicarage Road this summer.
This comes after Leventhal co-hosted a recent episode of The Athletic’s Watford-themed podcast From the Rookery End, where he spoke about a variety of subjects concerning Xisco Munoz’s side.
After it was recently reported that Championship side West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Gray this summer, Leventhal had this to say about the player and his current situation at the club.
He said: “From my understanding, he doesn’t appear to be sort of aggravating for a move.
“If it works out and it fits with his personal situation, it fits with his footballing determination to maybe prove some people wrong, then he will move on, but I don’t think that it’s something that is anything more than an ideal situation for Watford to maybe get a percentage of his wages off the wage bill, or if someone’s going to pay some money for him.
“But the money isn’t there in the Championship, in particular, to pay a large amount of money for someone like Andre Gray, who hasn’t got a great record at the moment.”
Watford signed Gray back in August 2017 from fellow Premier League side Burnley for a fee of £18.36 million. Since then, the 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £3.6 million according to Transfermarkt, has made 125 appearances for the Hornets but has only managed to score 21 goals and provide eight assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).
TIF Thoughts on Adam Leventhal’s comments on Gray and his situation at the club…
In our view, given how Gray only managed to score five goals in 30 appearances in the Championship last season, ultimately earning himself a rather uninspiring season rating of 6.27/10, making him one of Watford’s lowest-rated players last season according to WhoScored, this doesn’t fill us with confidence that he will do much better in the Premier League this season.
Do you think Watford should sell Andre Gray this summer?
Yes
No
Therefore, perhaps selling him to a club like West Brom could be beneficial for all parties if Watford are able to pick up a suitable transfer fee for him.
Also, given the vast number of centre-forwards that Watford currently have in their squad, it seems as though they may not necessarily miss Gray if he were to go this summer.
