Aston Villa correspondent Gregg Evans has explained why one of the club’s recent signings seemed to be announced so suddenly.

These days, it feels very unusual when a big club announces a new signing out of the blue, but when Aston Villa recently revealed Danny Ings had signed for the club, this was one of those rare occasions.

Everything seemed to happen so fast, and Evans has revealed why this was the case.

Speaking on the 1874 podcast, he explained that while he was aware of the deal, Villa suddenly dropped the news before he had the opportunity to fact-check all the information.

He said: “Yes, we did know about Danny Ings. But as all good journalists will do, they need to check their sources and make sure they’ve got the correct information.”

He then explained why it was so sudden, saying: “Villa rushed the announcement. They put it out because they were still trying to appease a fanbase that [they] knew was going to turn at some point because they were losing Jack Grealish. So yeah, it was a surprise to many.”

TIF Thoughts on Danny Ings and Aston Villa…

Judging by the reaction of some Villa fans regarding the sale of Grealish, it’s certainly understandable why the club were so keen to provide some good news with the bad.

Not only was Ings a good distraction tactic, but he should hopefully offer the club plenty on the pitch, too. With 55 goals in 140 Premier League games, the striker certainly has the experience to potentially help replace some of Grealish’s star quality.

What’s more, with a handful of other impressive signings so far this summer – such as Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey – the former Southampton striker probably won’t have to do it all by himself.
