Sheffield United fans have been reacting to claims surrounding the club’s transfer strategy in light of the Aaron Ramsdale saga.

Reports seem to indicate that the goalkeeper’s move to Arsenal is getting closer to being completed as he goes through his medical at the Emirates Stadium, but what is to become of the goalkeeper position once the move is finalised?

According to a report from local newspaper The Star, the board at Bramall Lane have told Slavisa Jokanovic that they would “prefer to sign a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale on loan, rather than committing themselves to a permanent deal”.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

So in a sense, they are cashing in and making big money on one sale – with reports suggesting the fee could reach as much as £30m – and then aiming to go cheap on his replacement.

This news was relayed to fans by @The_Bladesman on Twitter, where it’s fair to say they didn’t like what they saw, with many accusing the club of penny-pinching:

“Not sure all of this was made clear to Slav at the interview. Welcome to Sheffield Slav and our Poundland Prince. Maybe not what it says on the tin”

“Dangerous balancing act. Too many loans cost us Championship football a few years ago with players not fully committed to the long term cause knowing they return to their parent regardless. not to mention the financial output for no return”
“Poor planning, they knew Ramsdale was a potential leaver and should have had a replacement already identified and lined up as a contingency.”
“Can anyone else see Slav walking here”
“Cheap option again so they don’t spend owt”
“Surely they “Prepared for life without Ramsdale”. 12 days left is a long time in the window. If a loan is the best option yes, ok. But to use a short period left as an excuse for only going for loans is laughable.”

Will Sheffield United earn promotion?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

In fairness, as long as the money is reinvested in some fashion – not necessarily between the sticks – then there shouldn’t really be an issue. With The Star’s report hinting that Jokanovic still wants to bring in four more players before the window closes, there’s still time for the money to be spent somehow.
