Journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed the latest on Spurs’ move for defender Cristian Romero, speaking about interest from Barcelona.

It has been stated recently that while Romero wants to move to Tottenham, Lionel Messi wants his compatriot at Barcelona, and the Catalans could yet sign him on a loan deal with the option to buy him permanently.

Can Spurs miss out on Romero this summer?

Gold appeared on the latest Tottenham video from Football.london, and one topic of discussion was the situation of Romero. He sounded skeptical of interest from Barcelona, saying that the Argentine defender seems very keen on a move to Tottenham.

Gold claimed: “In football terms, you’re not talking about too much of a gap to bridge. But I think Spurs – I get the feeling that they probably know that they’re the main club in for him. I saw talk of Barcelona, but Barcelona, money-wise, they can’t afford a transfer.

“Even wages, with their wage budget absolutely being demolished by trying to give [Messi] a new contract. It doesn’t work like that. For me, it feels like Spurs know that they are in the prime position. Romero, it seems, [is] very keen on the move.”

TIF Thoughts on Romero…

Barcelona are struggling financially and it isn’t just in terms of transfer fees, it’s also about their wage budget. Unless they move on their high-paid stars, the Catalans won’t be able to register new players.

This can make it tough for them to sign the Argentine unless Atalanta let him go on an initial loan and pay his current wages. That way, Barcelona won’t have to pay any of his wages and they get him on what is essentially a free loan.

But as Gold suggests, Romero is keen on Tottenham and because of Barca’s finances, it does seem more likely that Spurs get him at this stage.
