Steve Howey believes signing Ryan Bertrand will prove to be a shrewd piece of business by Leicester City.
Bertrand’s Southampton contract expired at the end of last month and Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers moved quickly to agree terms with the former Chelsea left-back.
The 31-year-old heads to the King Power Stadium with bags of experience, having made 258 Premier League appearances.
Who should be Leicester's first choice left-back?
Luke Thomas
Ryan Bertrand
His move comes after Christian Fuchs, who won the Premier League title during his time with Leicester, saw his contract expire.
Bertrand will provide competition for promising full-back Luke Thomas. The 20-year-old made 25 appearances last term and rounded off a memorable campaign by starting the FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea.
While Leicester supporters would like to see Thomas develop and become an academy product who nails down a regular spot in Rodgers’ starting line-up, Howey insists beating other sides to free agent Bertrand is a good piece of business.
Speaking exclusively to TIF, former Leicester star Howey said: “Thomas and Bertrand will be vying for a position.
“It’s vitally important to have competition in every position. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a young lad or somebody with experience.
“Both will want to play so they will have to up their game. Bertrand will certainly be a good signing for the club.”
