Former Rangers star Michael Ball believes that a deal to sign Oli McBurnie this summer would be a “huge gamble” for the Scottish champions.

The Daily Mail has reported that Steven Gerrard’s side hold an interest in signing the Sheffield United striker despite their relegation from the Premier League.

The Blades paid a huge £20m fee to bring McBurnie into the club from Swansea City back in 2019 but he has struggled during his time at Bramall Lane.

In total, he has scored a mere seven goals in 65 games and netted just once in the Premier League in 2020/21 as the Blades finished rock-bottom and were relegated to the Championship.

The Mail claim that he is valued at £15m, with the club willing to take a £5m hit to get him off their books, with Rangers potentially willing to pay up to take him north of the border.

And Ball believes that such a signing would be a massive risk for the Gers, who were unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership this term.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, Ball said: “It’d be a huge gamble for Rangers. I think Rangers, financially, are probably not in that position.

“They do want to improve, it’s a position that they’ll be looking to bring in but he’s still young, he’s 24, he’s only scored one goal last season, could he score more up there? Maybe so.

“But it’s a huge gamble. If Ross Wilson thinks he’s the man, and they can raise that £12m or £15m for him, it’s huge pressure up there.

“There was pressure on him at Sheffield United to score and he didn’t do it.”
