Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Blackburn Rovers’ Adam Armstrong could make that step up to the Premier League and replace Danny Ings at St. Mary’s.

Armstrong was in devastating form in the Championship campaign that has just gone, scoring an incredible 28 goals in 40 appearances.

The 24-year-old is now being linked with a move to the Premier League, with Southampton one side who are said to be keen.

Would you like to see Armstrong at Southampton?

Absolutely!

Absolutely!

Too much of a gamble

According to the Daily Express, the Saints are plotting a £15m bid for the player and are currently leading the race ahead of the likes of West Ham and Newcastle United for his signature.

Asked by TIF if Armstrong was capable of replacing Ings, whose future at the club remains in doubt, Palmer replied:

“Listen, if you’re scoring that amount of goals, there’s every chance you can step up and score those goals in the Premier League. I mean, it’s an enormous amount of goals in the Championship, 28 goals.

“So, yeah, and they need another striker, even with Danny Ings, even if Danny Ings doesn’t depart. They need another striker because when Danny doesn’t play, they struggle to score goals.”

Ultimately, with a record like that, Armstrong probably is worth taking a punt on.

When you look at how the likes of Patrick Bamford and Ollie Watkins have performed after jumping from the Championship to the Premier League, you get the impression that perhaps Armstrong could follow suit given his recent exploits.
