Retired Premier League and England defender Steve Howey has claimed that he would not be surprised to see Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa succeed Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are currently searching for a new boss after Daniel Levy sacked the enigmatic 58-year-old following an underwhelming 17-month spell in charge.

Ryan Mason has been placed in temporary control of the north London outfit until the end of the season, but at just 29, is unlikely to receive the role on a full-time basis.

Several big names have already been ruled out of the running, including Erik ten Hag and Julian Nagelsmann, however, Howey believes Bielsa could be the man for the job after impressing during his three-year spell at Elland Road.

He said: “Bielsa seems like a strange man to be honest and very intense. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him there next season because nothing does surprise me in football.

“Nothing surprises me in football when you’re talking about players being sold and bought and also with managers coming and going. So it wouldn’t surprise me.”

TIF Thoughts on Bielsa to Spurs…

Bielsa’s contract at Elland Road expires over the summer, so could be a relatively cheap option for Levy in his pursuit of a new manager.

Nevertheless, it may come as quite a shock if the 65-year-old Argentine did make the switch to Leeds’ Premier League rivals, given the affinity shown between Bielsa and the supporters.

The former Atheltic Bilbao boss is not known for managing teams at the upper echelons of the division, and therefore, it’s perhaps more likely that he’ll stay in west Yorkshire for at least another season.
