Lee Ryder has been speaking on a recent edition of The Chronicle’s the Everything is Black & White podcast about Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

Newcastle's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Alan Shearer but how many goals did he score for the club?

The Toon beat the Blades thanks to a goal from Joe Willock, but Ryder also discussed other topics, and one issue he mentioned was Andy Carroll’s contract.

The 32-year-old’s deal with the Toon is set to expire at the end of the season, and there had been reports that he wouldn’t be offered a new deal, but Ryder suggested that while nothing has happened yet, that could change.

He said: (13:20) “We’re not hearing anything on Andy Carroll at the moment, but I think his contract was negotiated with people in high places at the club last year, and we’ll wait and see if that gets renewed.

(13:58) “It’s been a difficult second half of the season for him in terms of getting in the side. You need to get a run together; you need to have that sharpness.

“He hasn’t been able to put [a run] together. So we’ll wait and see what happens with him; there’s another game to go; sure, a lot of things will get sorted next week.”

Do you think Carroll will be offered a new contract?

TIF Thoughts on Carroll…

Carroll has made 18 Premier League appearances which isn’t actually that bad but those 18 appearances total just 381 minutes on the pitch.

So, you can see that when Carroll has played, it has been for a very short amount of time, and we would be surprised if he were offered an extension to his current deal after barely playing for most of the season.

However, he still has one game left, and it would be nice to see him get a goal in that one.
