Danny Murphy has been speaking on the latest edition of Match of the Day about Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
One player who really impressed him was Tyrone Mings.
Mings earned a 6.83 rating from WhoScored, and a 9/10 rating from the Birmingham Mail for his performance against Spurs, and Murphy lauded the England international with praise.
He said: (25:10) “I was really impressed with Mings. He was in control of his game today.
“He looked right at it. It was an audition [for the England team] for him today, and he passed with flying colours.
“He has always been good in the air, and I like the balance; if we do have to choose someone to play instead of Maguire, then that left-foot next to someone like Stones gives you a nice balance.
“He nullified Kane quite well, and he was a main reason why Villa won the game.
“It was a terrific performance from Villa.”
Do you think that Mings should start for England?
No, not at all
Yes, he deserves to
TIF Thoughts on Mings…
The 28-year-old, who is valued at £24.3m by Transfermarkt, has made 35 Premier League appearances for Villa this season and has an average WhoScored rating of 6.8, which ranks him in tenth place in their squad.
So, he has had a solid season, and with Euro 2020 looming, that performance against Spurs probably came at the ideal time for his England chances.
Aston Villa have had a good season from where they were last year, and you can’t say that Mings has not been an important part of that progress, and he probably deserves to be playing for England in the Euros.
