In an exclusive interview with This is Futbol, Keith Gillespie who spent one season at Manchester United, wishes his former club had signed Dayot Upamecano before Bayern Munich moved to sign the defender.

Upamecano has already agreed a deal to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season and he will now be joined by his current manager Julian Nagelsmann, who has also agreed a pre-agreement to become their manager next season.

Do Man United need a new midfielder?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Man United have recently handed Eric Bailly a new contract with just him, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire the only recognised centre backs currently at the club.

Speaking on why he wanted Man United to sign Upamecano, who ex-Red Devil Rio Ferdinand labelled as “formidable” following one Champions League display, and how they need someone better to partner Maguire, Gillespie exclusively told This is Futbol:

I did like Upamecano at RB Leipzig, but he’s obviously going to Bayern Munich so they need somebody to partner Maguire as they’ve spent big money on him.

“They need to bring in a real top-class centre back, like if Man United had brought in Virgil van Dijk alongside Harry Maguire, how much of a better defender would that have made Maguire?”

Nice easy one to start off with, who currently sits top of the table?

Maguire has played every single minute for Man United in the Premier League which has seen him earn an impressive 7.05 WhoScored rating in the league.

Man United have also been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen centre back, Edmond Tapsoba, who only joined the Bundesliga side in January 2020.
