Liverpool journalist James Pearce has been sharing his thoughts on Reds centre-back Rhys Williams and his future with the Merseyside club.

This comes after Pearce made an appearance on a recent episode of The Athletic’s Liverpool-themed The Red Agenda podcast where he spoke about a range of topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

On the subject of Williams and what the future could hold for the defender, specifically during the upcoming summer transfer window, Pearce had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I look at Rhys Williams, and you think with the centre-backs coming back, you’d imagine a loan next season would be ideal for him, probably a Football League loan, maybe a Championship club, I think that would be great for his development, because of course, with the players coming back, it’s difficult to see him featuring much.”

Williams, who is a product of Liverpool’s youth academy, made his senior debut for the Reds back in September and has since gone on to make 19 appearances for Klopp’s side (per Transfermarkt).

The 20-year-old, who is currently valued at £4.5 million, made his first-team debut in September, with a total of nine coming in the Premier League, six in the Champions League and two each in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

TIF Thoughts on James Pearce’s comments on Williams and his future…

Given how Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip set to return from long-term injuries in the coming months, it’s easy to see why Pearce thinks a loan move away from Anfield this summer to a club where he would be guaranteed regular game time would be beneficial for Williams.

Do you think Liverpool should loan out Rhys Williams this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Also, with the Reds reportedly closing in on a deal to sign RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, if this deal were to become a reality, this would presumably only push Williams further down the pecking order, making his chances of getting regular first-team action slim, which would only make a loan move away from Liverpool a better option for the Englishman.
