Barry Fry has told This Is Futbol that Liverpool simply have to spend this summer or risk being left behind.

The Reds have endured a terrible season and are losing their Premier League crown, which they won so convincingly last term.

The postponement of their game with Manchester United has perhaps delayed the inevitable; a Liverpool win would have handed the title to City, as it would have made it mathematically impossible for United to catch them.

They have endured a rotten season in terms of their injuries and their results, as prior to the scheduled United game, they had lost nine games and drawn another nine, compared to three draws and three losses last term.

Fry, the Director of Football at Peterborough United, believes that the club need to splash the cash if they are to find themselves back at the top table next season.

Indeed, he predicts that the likes of City, United, and Chelsea will be spending big this summer, and that the Reds must compete in the market if they are to satisfy the ambitions of manager Jurgen Klopp, though he doubts FSG will put their hands in their pockets.

Speaking exclusively to TIF, Fry said: “Come the summer they will have to satisfy the manager with their recruitment policy. And I’m not sure they’ve got the money or they’ll spend the money.

“And I think if they don’t, they’ve got to give him a chance to get back to challenge Man City, Man United, everybody that’s up there.

“Chelsea’s going to splash out as usual and things like that and who knows who else but he’s got to be given a chance because I think Klopp’s a winner. He wants to win things again.”
