Celtic podcaster Kevin McCluskey has recently talked about goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas and his future at the club.

On the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast, McCluskey talked about various issues involving the Hoops. One player that he talked about was Barkas and his future at the club.

He made it clear that the Greek goalkeeper should play the last four games of the campaign and he just needs the trust of the defenders around him and that is something that he hasn’t got at Celtic so far.

Should Barkas be given another chance?

Celtic had shelled out an initial fee of £2.95 million to sign Barkas from AEK Athens, but they have to pay some add-ons based on appearances. The Greek has failed to establish himself as a regular in the side though, having been in and out of the team.

McCluskey believes that Barkas can still be a top ‘keeper and that is evident from his spell at AEK Athens. He said: “I think Barkas hasn’t covered himself in glory so far this season but his performances previous to signing, with AEK Athens, showed that he’s a top-class ‘keeper on his day. He just needs to have the confidence of the defenders that are in front of him, which he didn’t have earlier.

“Again, if you have spent £5 million on a keeper, you’re probably not going to recoup that this summer. He should be the number one going forward and he needs to get the last four games under his belt to get his confidence back up.”

Celtic fans, can you get 8/8 on this quiz on forgotten players? First up: who is this?

TIF Thoughts on Barkas…

Since Barkas has joined Celtic, his value has only fallen (£3.6 million). This shows that Celtic could certainly struggle to recoup the money that they spent on him.

So if they want some profit on the deal, the best thing might be to give Barkas a run in the first-team on a regular basis. The Premiership title is out of their reach now, so the Hoops have nothing lose in the remaining games of the season. So if Barkas does well, he could be a reliable option for the next campaign.
