Journalist Alison McConnell has recently delivered a claim about Leigh Griffiths, his fitness and potential candidature for Scotland ahead of the European Championships.

This came after McConnell appeared on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show. The panel talked about numerous issues involving Scottish football, the national team and Celtic.

McConnell talked about Griffiths and the prospect of him missing out on a spot in the Scotland side, even though Oli McBurnie has been ruled out for the next few months. The journalist believes that Griffiths has failed to get a grip on his fitness since the last summer.

Will Griffiths earn a Scotland call-up?

Griffiths hasn’t played the full 90 minutes of a Premiership game this season, which shows his lack of fitness. In the previous Old Firm, he played just a single minute of action.

McConnell believes that Griffiths will be kicking himself because if was fit, he could have had a realistic chance of playing in the Euros in the summer.

She said: “You do wonder about someone like Leigh Griffiths in a situation like this, where you think he’s just not had any sustained football throughout this campaign. I think his fitness has been well short, he’s never seemed to catch up from the summer.

“You’re thinking he must be kicking himself because he’s a boy who has a lot of natural ability. If he had the match fitness, there’s a platform for him there and Scotland could’ve done with him.”

Celtic fans, can you get 8/8 on this quiz on forgotten players? First up: who is this?

TIF Thoughts on Leigh Griffiths…

The Scotsman has played only 656 minutes of Premiership football this season and even though he’s scored five times, game time and performances have been rather inconsistent.

Neil Lennon had actually criticised Griffiths for poor fitness earlier in the campaign, but the issues have continued to persist. This shows that the striker has failed to learn from mistakes, despite the fact that he did earn a national call-up this season.

With McBurnie injured, getting himself fit could’ve given Griffiths a real chance to play at the Euros. Perhaps, if he can still get recover some fitness, he might still have a chance.
