Alan Shearer has been speaking on the latest edition of Match of the Day 2 about Sunday’s Premier League games.

First up in this Gareth Barry quiz, which club did Villa sign the midfielder from?

One of the matches that he spent quite a bit of time on was Aston Villa’s 3-1 win over Fulham at Villa Park.

The away side took the lead after Aleksandar Mitrovic pounced on a dreadful error by Tyrone Mings.

Dean Smith answered by bringing Keinan Davis and Trezeguet off the bench, and the duo turned the game around as the Egyptian bagged a double and Davis provided the assist for Trezeguet’s second.

However, it was Trezeguet who Shearer spent time praising.

He said: (48:55) “Villa were poor, they were going nowhere until Dean Smith made the two substitutions, Keinan Davis, and, in particular, Trezeguet.

“All of a sudden, they’ve got a threat in the final third, which they didn’t have for large parts of the game.

“His movement was excellent, and all of a sudden, Fulham have got someone in and around who [was] causing problems.

“It’s clever from Trezeguet because all the Fulham defenders are running in to [their] goal, Trezeguet just steps out, and that’s a really clever finish [Trezeguet’s goal].

“All of a sudden, Fulham have got to do things defensively.”

TIF Thoughts on Trezeguet…

This was the Egyptian’s 20th league appearance of the season, and he grabbed both his first and second league goals of the season in what could prove to be an important three points.

Villa are now on 44 points, just five points off sixth place, so they still have a chance of a European place, and Trezeguet’s double might go a long way to securing that.

The 26-year-old, who is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, has only started 11 league games this season, but with a performance like that, we think that he could have put himself in Smith’s plans for Villa’s next match against Liverpool.
