Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting on Twitter after former captain Michael Dawson called out Matt Doherty during the North London derby.

Jose Mourinho’s men took the lead through an incredible effort from Erik Lamela, but Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard equalised for Arsenal just before the half time interval.

The Norway international converted Kieran Tierney’s pullback with the help of a deflection via Toby Alderweireld, however, it was Tottenham’s right-back Doherty who came in for criticism.

Tierney got past the former Wolves man far too easily for Dawson’s liking, and the Sky Sports pundit let his feelings known during the break.

He said: “What the goal came from, with Tierney one v one with Doherty, it’s too easy. He gets there, crosses the ball, they get a little bit fortunate with the goal where it comes off Toby Alderweireld’s leg, but they’ve got to stop the ball at source. Stop the ball getting down the right, and then one v one Doherty’s got to do better,” it was a stance echoed by a large section of Spurs supporters.

“Awful player. Can’t defend, can’t attack. Knew we were not gonna win the minute I saw he was starting. Forced Hojbjerg to effectively play as a second right back, which isolated Ndombele. Should’ve been subbed off for Aurier.”

“Called it when we were in talks to buy Doherty, awful purchase and zero upgrade on Aurier. Needs to be offloaded immediately this summer and just bite the financial loss as we won’t get £15m for him”

@woodbridge_carl

“Got to go”

@tinman_557

“100%. Beaten one in one EVERY SINGLE TIME. Nice lad, but he’s not going to miraculously get materially quicker, smarter or more talented. Relying on other players to ‘help him out’ throws out team balance, wears everyone out and simply isn’t sustainable. Know when to FOLD EM’…”

@Sunnybuckets7

“Don’t need any pundits to see that. Doherty is a joke, the only bigger concern is that he is getting in the team instead of Serge and Japhet. He needs to retrain to be a plumber or something.”

@winster1972

“Doherty was certainly the weak link today. Often out of position and without the pace needed to recover.”

@xplrer99

“Doherty was a disgrace today. Didn’t bring down his man. I don’t think he ended up even with a yellow card. In fact how many fouls did he commit today?”

@AmosHermans

It’s been a tough start to life at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Doherty, and this was another underwhelming performance from the Republic of Ireland international.
