Speaking exclusively to GiveMeSport, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly came close to joining Manchester City last summer.

Pep Guardiola made reinforcing his central defence a priority, bringing in both Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake ahead of this season, with the former having an incredible impact at the Etihad.

However, according to Romano, it could have been Koulibaly stealing the headlines in England as a Manchester City player after almost signing for the Premier League outfit last year.

On the Senegal international, Romano told GiveMeSport in an exclusive interview:

“Last summer he was really close to Manchester City. His agent is strong with Premier League clubs.”

A move to English football’s top flight in the near future could still be possible for £45m-rated Koulibaly. According to Football Insider, Everton have set their sights on signing the 29-year-old in a move that could reunite him with Carlo Ancelotti.

As for Manchester City, Guardiola is likely to target a centre-forward this time round following the news that Sergio Aguero will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
