Leeds United fans have been reacting to news that Stuart Attwell will be in charge of their game against Arsenal this weekend.

The two teams are pretty much neck and neck in the table at the moment and with an outside chance of European football possible, it’s going to be a very important game for both sides if they are to sneak in via the league.

The news about the referee was relayed to supporters on social media via @El_Loco_Jo, and according to them, this is the first Leeds United game that he has officiated since the rather controversial game against Aston Villa back in 2019, where Marcelo Bielsa’s men caused an uproar by playing on despite an injury to a Villa player, then allowing them to walk in an equaliser.

They also pointed out some of his stats from refereeing other games in the past, with both talking points certainly raised some interesting responses from supporters on Twitter:

“This Villa game, remember it well. The one during which I had my heart attack. Supporting this club is bad for my health!! But I’m Leeds, that’s all!”

“He was awful for that entire game”
“Oh no….. There I was thinking the standard of refereeing was a bit better in the sense they let the game flow more.”
“I don’t blame ref for that match getting out of hand. That lays with the Villa forward who lunged from behind into Coops & pretended to be hurt when he didn’t get the ball. Villa team & management over reacted. They had done the same at Stoke previously & twice since”
“Great stats, tempted to go with over 4 cards in the game looking at his past record for both clubs”
Yikes ! I forgot who his allegiances lie with…his claim to fame was the “ghost goal” he awarded to Reading against an unmentionable team down the M1 back in 2008, now I remember why…hope he behaves himself on Sunday !!!!

Are you happy with this referee appointment?

No

Let’s just hope he and the rest of his officiating crew aren’t as big a talking point after the game as they are before it.
