Newcastle United fans have been reacting furiously to a controversial decision in their defeat to Sheffield United.
Billy Sharp’s penalty sealed the points for the Blades on Tuesday night, though aside from any anger stemming from becoming the first side to taste defeat against Chris Wilder’s men this league season, some supporters vented their anger at referee Andy Madley for his decision not to send off the would-be match-winner later in the game.
With the score at 1-0, Sharp was booked for a rather strong challenge on Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar, however, you could easily have made the case that it should have been a red card. Indeed, that is exactly what the Newcastle United fans were incensed about on social media in the aftermath:
“What is the point in VAR if we’re not looking at things like that.”
Having been down to ten men themselves earlier in the game following two yellow cards for Ryan Fraser, going into the last ten minutes with the sides level in terms of personnel certainly would have given them a greater chance to get something out of the game.
